Missouri Agriculture Ranks Nationally

Missouri ranks 2nd in the United States in the number of farms with 105,000 farms according to the 2002 and 2007 Census

of Agriculture. While many states are losing farms, Missouri posted a one percent increase in the number of farms since the 2002 Census of Agriculture.

Missouri Agriculture Impacts Economic Development

Missouri’s crops, livestock, processing and other agriculture sectors accounted for more than $12 billion in 2008.

Missouri Agriculture is the Social, Economical and Environmental Bond of Communities

Missouri agriculture is at the heart of the state’s heritage, the foundation for strong communities and a strong quality of life.

Some examples of economic impact:

  • 700-cow dairy operation in Missouri with gross revenue of $2.4 million returns $6 million in economic activity. This operation includes 11 full-time employees.
  • 2, 400 head swine contract finishing operation with $122,000 in gross revenue returns $207,000 in annual economic activity.

Missourians Enjoy Locally Grown, Healthy Agriculture Products

Agriculture in Missouri provides grocers the opportunity to buy fresh, affordable, locally grown meat, produce, eggs and dairy products. Real Missouri farms produce many of the affordable, healthy food options that are available in local grocery stores across Missouri. Missouri also ranks 6th among states for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms. There are 450 CSA’s in Missouri that provide fresh, locally produced food each summer to their CSA partners. Missouri farms even produce Christmas Trees!

The Question

At a time when it is nearly impossible to buy a single consumer item at the store that doesn’t come from China or the Pacific Rim, Missourian’s should be concerned that their food production will soon be outsourced overseas. Do we really want China and Indonesia producing our chicken breasts, pork chops, and Thanksgiving hams and turkeys?
